Comparative Mythologies
Most people do not understand exactly how important mythology is and how essential it is to our lives. The first problem comes with the definition of what exactly is mythology. Perhaps you think it is a series of old stories and tales that described civilisations long gone. I have to disagree profoundly. If we take a statement that will no doubt cause concern to some we will be able to consider the real implications of mythology. Statement: Christianity is a mythology. For some such a statement is unthinkable and I would contend that the reason for this unthinkability is because those who would react in such a way are unable to think with any depth. For the fundamentalist adherrent to the Christian myth thinking and deep contemplation are activities replaced by blind faith and allegiance to words printed on a page rather than any qualitative experience or well researched enquiry. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this as long as these so called Christians do not get aggressive and demand their myth is the only myth, it is not. The first position to consider is if mythology is alive in our cultures today and if so to what extent and purpose does it condition our perceptions? I would contend that not only is mythology alive and well but it is an essential active component of the human psyche. Further, the role of mythology in the human psyche is to aid survival of the individual and the group and as such mythology can be seen to be a functional consequence of the evolutionary choice in the human animal to develop consciousness rather than to mutate form. As Christianity most certainly did not exist 3000 years ago we could reasonably assume that it is possible it could die out as a belief 3000 years from now. In the year 5008, hoping we are still surviving as a species, will historians look back at Christianity in the same way we now look back on the Gods of Mount Olympus who ruled the mythology of Greece? During the days of Zeus the population believed in the reality of their beliefs with all the fevour and committment that we will find today in Southern Baptist Churches. If you travelled back in time and told the Greek populations that Zeus, Hera and all of the gods were a mythology then they would probably react in the same way Baptists' would to the idea Christianity is a mythology.
